Hooks run on CHAINX, on top of XRP Ledger. Hooks are small, efficient pieces of code being defined on an XRPL account — unlike most smart contracts. Hooks allow logic to be executed before and/or after XRPL transactions.

CHAINX is an alternate rail that uses the core XRP Ledger technology and retains the digital asset XRP as the native asset. This rail (or chain) will allow for the transfer of XRP between the main XRP Ledger and CHAINX. Basically CHAINX is XRP Ledger with more functionality.

Sidechains are independent chains that work adjacent to a parent blockchain, also called a mainnet (which in this case is the XRP Ledger). Sidechains are usually used to solve scalability and functionality issues present in the parent blockchain.

Before installing a Hook on your account, you first configure how the Hook should work. Depending on the Hook, they can either trigger on incoming or outgoing transaction, or both. This enables Hook developers to build safety features like the Firewall Hook, that prevents certain transactions ever coming through.

You can also uninstall a Hook at any time.

Hooks are not mandatory to use XRP Ledger or even CHAINX, but it can increase user safety and make your account management easier. Hooks are basically automations that you can setup as you wish.

Anybody can start developing Hooks, we even have a Builder to get started, but Hooks features on Hooks Store are strongly audited by XRPL Labs, to ensure the safety of Xaman users. Xaman users are able to only install Hooks from the Hooks Store.
